Bear Lake, Spokane

Directions

From Spokane drive north on highway 2 East. It is the first lake that you will come across. It is on the left side of the road. In the summer, you may be charged two dollars for access to the lake.

Description

Bear Lake is a small lake with two places to access the lake.

The east side of the lake has a restroom and a small picnic area, but never has a lifeguard. This is good because you will not be harassed about staying in the swimming area. However, on the east side you may need to walk through a few aquatic plants to get in the water.

The west side of the lake has a wonderful swimming area with a set of 4 floating platforms in the water. There are places to grill food, restrooms, and picnic tables. The downside of the west side for divers or snorkelers is that may be harassed by a lifeguard for going out of the swimming area.

Bear Lake has many features that make it a great place to dive. It often is quite clear and you are likely to see fish. You are likely to see channel catfish, largemouth bass, green sunfish, and yellow perch. If you are lucky you may see a turtle or a rainbow trout. Some the best places to explore are along the shoreline near and among the aquatic plants. Snorkeling in this lake is just is good as diving because most of the interesting features are in the shallows. The Washington Department of Fish and Game currently stocks the lake with channel catfish and rainbows trout. The max depth of the lake is 54 feet.
